The Plankton Fund was created in response to the heartworm positive dogs that come into the Cleveland Animal Care and Control (CACC) that have limited options due to the cost of heartworm treatment.
“Plankton” came to CACC in the late stages of heartworm disease. Despite attempts, we were unfortunately unable to find a rescue willing to take in Plankton. He unfortunately became very ill and passed away. We honor Plankton with this fund, to help others in need from this preventable and treatable disease.
Options are more limited for dogs that are heartworm positive, as adopters, receiving shelters and rescues are unable to afford to treat every dog for heartworm. Heartworm costs an average of about $600-$1,000 per dog.
The goal of this fund is to support adopters and rescues who choose to take in these dogs, and offer them the support they need to give them the necessary medical treatment.
Donations to the Plankton Fund are received by Friends of the Cleveland Kennel, and are designated solely to treat heartworm positive dogs in need from Cleveland Animal Care and Control who have a committed rescue or adopter.
